Appliance repair in Broomfield, starting with the sound
The habit this site was built on works for the rest of the house too. Before a part is named, somebody listens. A washer, a dryer or a dishwasher tells you a great deal about what is wearing out, and the right question on the phone often saves a trip. SubZero Repair Broomfield repairs appliances of every make in homes across Broomfield.
What we repair
Refrigerators and freezers, built-in or freestanding. Front-load and top-load washers, gas and electric dryers, dishwashers, ranges, wall ovens and cooktops. That covers GE, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag and Frigidaire, Speed Queen in the laundry room and Miele or Sub-Zero in the kitchen. If yours is not on that list, call anyway.
What the sound usually means
- Washer: one or two knocks, then a pause and more waterNormal
The washer has felt an uneven load and is trying to spread it out. Samsung washers show Ur while they retry, and Samsung says that is not a fault.
- Washer: banging on every spin, or the machine creeping across the floorCall us
If leveling and a smaller load do not stop it, look at the suspension rods, the shock absorbers or the drum bearings. Bearings rumble louder as the spin speeds up.
- Dryer: a squeal or a chirp that comes and goes with the drumCall us
Usually the idler pulley or a drum roller drying out. Caught early it is a small part; left alone, the belt that rides on it wears through.
- Dryer: a rhythmic thumpCall us
A flat spot on a drum roller, or a sneaker in the load. Run it empty: if the thump stays, it is the dryer.
- Dishwasher: grinding or crunching while it drainsCall us
Often broken glass, a cherry pit or a bottle cap in the sump, chewed by the drain pump. Power off at the breaker before reaching in.
- Dishwasher: a soft hum and the swish of spray armsNormal
The circulation pump at work. Quiet models are rated in decibels for exactly this sound.
- Refrigerator or freezer: clicking, but no cooling after itCall us
The compressor is being asked to start and is not starting. On any make the start relay is checked before anyone talks about a compressor.
Checks you can make first
- Read the display. On LG washers UE means an unbalanced load, and LG says its front-loaders do best filled to about two thirds of the drum. Samsung uses Ub, U6 or UE when a cycle stops for the same reason.
- Level the washer. Rock it corner to corner. If it moves, adjust the feet until it sits solid. On a new machine, check that the shipping support or bolts came out.
- Listen with the load out. Run a dryer or washer empty for a minute. A sound that stays with an empty drum belongs to the machine, not to the laundry.
- Look in the filters. A dishwasher's filter and sump, a front-loader's drain pump trap. Bosch, for one, tells owners to clean the drain pump on its WGA12400UC washer whenever it rattles or blocks. Turn off the power, and expect some water.
When to stop and call
Stop using the appliance if a sound arrives with a burning smell, a tripped breaker, water on the floor or a drum that will not turn by hand. The same goes for a refrigerator that clicks and warms, because the food has a clock on it. Turn the water off at the valve for a leaking washer or dishwasher, then call (720) 704-2791. Someone picks up 24/7; a technician can be at your door 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days.
How the visit works
The technician runs the appliance, listens for the sound you described, then confirms the cause with a meter or by turning the part by hand. You get the part, the reason and a firm price before anything more comes apart. The visit is $89, and it is credited to the repair if you go ahead. Built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration has its own page: refrigerator and freezer repair.
Questions about other appliances
- You are a Sub-Zero business. Do you really work on other makes?
- Yes. SubZero Repair Broomfield kept its name, but the technicians repair GE, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag, Frigidaire, Speed Queen, Miele and the rest, along with Sub-Zero. Tell us the make and, if you can find it, the model on the label when you call.
- Is the visit priced differently for a washer than for a refrigerator?
- No. Every appliance starts with the same $89 visit. Once the fault is found you hear a firm price for the repair, and the $89 is taken off it if you go ahead.
- My washer is showing a code. Should I call first or look it up?
- Look it up first, because many codes are instructions rather than faults. UE on an LG or Samsung washer, or E4 on a Frigidaire top-loader, is the machine asking you to rebalance the load. A code that comes back with every load is the time to call.
